Universal Headspace and Chamber Depth Gauge

United States Patent Nr. 5,546,667, Deutsches Gebrauchsmuster Rollennummer G 94 04 195.4

Use :

The the chamber depth is one of the most important parameters when it comes to the accuracy of a firearm. On rimless or beltless cartridges this is the length responsible for the hedadspace. The usual way to test the headspace or chamber depth is the use of GO and NO GO gauge. With these type of gauges it can only be checked if they are within or over the limits of the gauge. Every caliber or increment requires an additional gauge. .

The adjustable gauge system that we would like to introduce to you here can effectivly measure the headspace as chamber depth to a tolerance of ± 0,01 mm / 0.0004 inch on around 200 different calibers.

Our universal system for the accurate headspace / chamber depth measurement consists of three parts. Those parts will be assembled in a patented way into a gauge that can fit around 200 different calibers. The measurement is done by inserting the preset gauge into the chamber. Then adjust the lenght step by step until it fits in tight. In a table the overall length for the standard headspace or chamber depth (CIP) of the caliber is stated together with the tolerance. The overall length of the gauge in the actual firearm will be then compared with the give length from the table. The offset from the standard overall length is the offset from the standard headspace or chamber depth. On cartridges with a rim or a belt one can measure the actual depth to the shoulder of the chamber. With cartridges that headspace on the shoulder the measures chamber depth is used to determine the headspace.

All sorts of self created (non-standardized) wildcat calibers can also be measured once the necessary overall length for the headspace or chamber depth is determined by simply measuring it from a sample chamber.
The accuracy achievable with the gauges is ± 0,01 mm/ ±0.0004 inch.

The key part of the gauge is the head which allows, due to its special geometrical shape, to measure different shoulder angles. The radius has a given relation to the flat front end of the gauge. The setting of the gauge is simply done by adjusting the overall length to a given value. The required overall length for each caliber is listed in a table. The adjusted gauge is then chambered and checked. Adjust the O.A.L. to a length where the bolt will close under a little bit of drag. The difference between the given length and the effective length will given the deviation from the exact headspace / chamber depth as defined by CIP.

We sell the gauges world wide direct. In certain areas we have partners we work with. For a contact in your area, a current prices of the complete set or the subsets please get in touch with us. Due to the fact that we need an export license for the gauges a short delivery time might occure.

The System is available as complete set or in different subsets .

The system consists of:

  • 3 gauge heads with counter screw
  • 3 gauge bases with counter screw
